So it’s not that we had so many kids, it’s that we were so big and so white. Ha! Yes, white families are no big deal, but big white families are apparently not common. It reminded me of what the Canadian mom I met in Guatemala, who also had 4 kids, said - “Anytime someone was coming to visit us here, I would just tell them to get off the boat and ask anyone where the big white family lived - and everyone knew where to tell them to go”. None of us can believe you have 4 kids because. Because, she said, with a bit of hesitation. So, why is it so hard to believe? I asked. ![]() Finally, I asked her what the big deal was. She just could not wrap her head around us having 4 kids. She could not get over the size of our family. One of her brother’s that we met said about her: “She’s the oldest in our family. She smiles and laughs and talks loudly constantly, and makes jokes. Si, Molli, no te preocupes, ya me voy!” Don’t worry - I’m coming! She’s a goofball. She would leave me voice memos, one after another, in semi-comprehensible-for-me Spanish which would always start in a sing-song-y voice with “Mooooooooooollllllliiiiiiiii. So - we met both her brothers, several of her cousins, and several of her friends, as well as her, multiple times. Turns out Magali is a one-of-a-kind, extremely hilarious and ridiculously boisterous, friendly, warm, and expressive person, who also employs every one of her family members and friends in the business. Reyna, the caretaker of the house, gave us her friend Magali’s number, who owns a taxi company. Because the plot of paradise where we were living was 15 minutes outside of Centro (yay!), and because we chose not to rent a car (so glad), we had to use taxi drivers quite a bit (nothing is expensive here). The amount of swag is just limitless, like the things that these young people can do with their bodies and the music they can play and the drumrolls, and the haircuts and the bodies. We met many taxi drivers. I wanted different characters, I didn’t want us all doing the same thing I wanted a black orchestra, I wanted the steppers, I needed the vocalists My college was traveling around the world and life was my teacher We rehearsed at TSU for many years in Third Ward I grew up in Houston, Texas and visiting Prairie View And I will do it by whatever means necessary. My job is to somehow make them curious enough or persuade them by hook or crook to get more aware of themselves and where they came from and what they are into and what is already there and just to bring it out. To me we are the most beautiful creatures in the whole world. ![]() It’s…I have no choice over it in the first place.
